Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Moshi/Arusha – Briefing and equipment check.

If you have opted for the optional airport transfers, we will pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport or Arusha airport and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi.

Pre-trek briefing at your Moshi hotel. You should be planning to arrive at least one day before the start of the trek. Today we will spend time having a pre-trek briefing. We will also review your equipment and rent any equipment which is needed.

Day 2: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp (11 km | 5-7 hours | 1,640m to 2,850m).

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp (6 km | 4-6 hours | 2,850m to 3,900m).

The trek continues with a steep ascent as you leave the forest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The path levels out slightly before reaching Barranco Camp (3,950m), nestled beneath the impressive Great Barranco Wall.

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp (5.5 km | 4-5 hours | 3,900m to 3,995m).

The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging yet rewarding climb. You will scramble up steep rocky sections, but no technical climbing skills are required. Once at the top, you will be treated to incredible panoramic views. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before ascending to Karanga Camp (3,995m), where you rest for the night.

Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4 km | 4-5 hours | 3,995m to 4,673m).

This day is a gradual but steady climb towards Barafu Camp (4,673m). The terrain is mostly rocky and barren, with strong winds common in this high-altitude zone. Upon arrival, you rest early, as the summit attempt begins at midnight.

Day 6: Summit Day: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and descent to Mweka Camp (14.2 km | 10-14 hours | 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,110m).

Around midnight, you start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The steep and demanding climb takes you past Stella Point (5,739m) before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your last night on the mountain.

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and departure (9 km | 3-4 hours | 3,110m to 1,640m).
