The trek continues with a steep ascent as you leave the forest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. As you climb, you’ll witness stunning views of Kilimanjaro’s Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. The path levels out slightly before reaching Barranco Camp (3,950m), nestled beneath the impressive Great Barranco Wall.
The day starts with the famous Barranco Wall, a challenging yet rewarding climb. You will scramble up steep rocky sections, but no technical climbing skills are required. Once at the top, you will be treated to incredible panoramic views. The trail then descends into the Karanga Valley before ascending to Karanga Camp (3,995m), where you rest for the night.
This day is a gradual but steady climb towards Barafu Camp (4,673m). The terrain is mostly rocky and barren, with strong winds common in this high-altitude zone. Upon arrival, you rest early, as the summit attempt begins at midnight.
Around midnight, you start the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The steep and demanding climb takes you past Stella Point (5,739m) before reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrating and taking photos, you descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for your last night on the mountain.
A final descent through lush rainforest leads to Mweka Gate (1,640m), where you receive a summit certificate. From here, a vehicle will transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for a well-deserved rest.
